Strong Solution: Are Implant Dentures Right for Me?

February 9, 2026

Hands of dentist and patient discussing replacement teeth over X-rays

Tooth loss can detract from your daily quality of life in several ways. For instance, you might develop challenges biting and chewing, enunciating certain sounds, or smiling confidently with gaps in your grin.

Regardless of how many teeth went missing, your dentist can provide lifelike dentures to improve your mouth’s appearance and functionality. But if you’re seeking a more reliable solution, you might consider getting implant dentures instead. If you’re on the fence about this procedure or are unsure what’s involved, continue reading to learn more about it so you can decide if it’s right for you!

What Are Some Drawbacks of Traditional Dentures?

Many patients choose to restore their smiles with dentures because this cost-effective treatment is also incredibly versatile. Whether you need a full or partial set, your dentist can provide a lifelike set of teeth to replace the ones that fell out, so you can eat and speak more normally.

But did you know that your jaw starts to thin after adult teeth go missing? Without roots in place to stimulate new bone growth each time you bite down, the bone begins degenerating and can eventually become too weak and frail to support your restoration. As a result, your dentures can become ill-fitting. This can cause sores, a misaligned bite, or plenty of embarrassment if you’re struggling to eat, speak, or keep them in your mouth.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Many experts consider dental implants the ideal way to rebuild smiles because of their unique advantages. They are the only prosthetics that involve surgically placing a support rod into your jaw to help prevent the bone loss that typically occurs. It can take 3 to 6 months to recover from this procedure, because that’s usually about how long it takes for your mouth to produce enough new bone to fuse with this pole in a process called osseointegration. Then, it functions like a root to keep your jaw active and healthy.

If you’re frustrated by ill-fitting dentures, your provider might recommend placing four to eight implants to anchor a specially designed set of replacement teeth more permanently.

Am I A Good Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Dental implants offer many unique advantages, like strengthening the foundation of your mouth, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everyone’s a good candidate for the procedure. Your dentist will need to update your medical history and examine your mouth before continuing to help determine whether it’s the best solution for you.

For instance, they’ll take X-rays or other images to measure your jawbone density to verify that you can support dental implants. If not, don’t lose hope! In some instances, an additional bone graft can bulk it up to continue.

If you’re considering getting implant dentures but have unanswered questions about the process, you can learn more by contacting your dentist for a consultation!
